thought transference and emotional induction in narcissistic
transference:
their role in therapeutic action
FRIDAY EVENING, MARCH 16th, 7:30–9:30 PM
Spotnitz considered narcissistic transference to be the basis of therapeutic
action. The analyst experiences emotional inductions, which suggests that he is
experiencing the patient’s feelings, and finds himself thinking and acting in ways
that conform to the patient’s unconscious transference fantasy. How is this
process used for therapeutic gain?

FRIDAY EVENING, MARCH 30th, 7:00–9:30 PM *note early start time
A Long History of Madness, a film by
Mieke Bal and Michelle Williams
Gamaker, is based on the book, Mère
Folle by Françoise Davoine. If your
mentally ill patient dies, are you to
blame? For Parisian psychoanalyst,
Dr. Françoise Davoine, the question
becomes disturbingly real as one of
her patients, Ariste, dies. Davoine is
abducted and put on trial by medieval fools and through the course of one
hellish day—across several centuries and countries—must argue her case.
As the journey forces Dr. Davoine to question her own life, through a mix of
fiction, documentar, and theory A Long History of Madness takes the viewer on a
journey into the minds of the “mad and those designated to cure them.”
Dr. Hurst will facilitate discussion following the 2-hr.film. To view trailer:
